Terraform
Infrastructure as code for cloud and data centre.
Terraform describes infrastructure as code, manages its state and shows what will happen before every change. Providers exist for Azure, AWS, VMware and many network and platform APIs. We use it for cloud foundations and repeatable environments, combined with Ansible for the configuration within them.
Since the 2023 licence change, Terraform has been under the Business Source License. The licence still permits running your own infrastructure; competing offerings are restricted. OpenTofu is an open-source fork. We work out with you which option fits.
A good fit if …
- cloud resources and environments need to be reproducible
- you run several similar environments, such as test and production
- changes should be visible before they are rolled out
Not a good fit if …
- the focus is mainly on network device configuration; in that case, use Ansible
- storage, locking and access rights for the state have not been settled
