Proxmox VE
KVM virtualisation with management, clustering and backup.
Proxmox VE combines KVM virtualisation, containers (LXC), clustering, high availability and Ceph storage in one interface. Proxmox Backup Server provides a matching backup solution. The software is open source, with support available by subscription.
We place it in Trial. It has proven itself mainly in small and medium-sized environments; for multiple clusters, there is Proxmox Datacenter Manager. We adopt KVM as the underlying technology; Proxmox VE is a platform built on it. In large environments, we first check support, integration with existing backup tools, automation and the operating model.
- VMware is to be replaced in small or medium-sized clusters
- the team has Linux experience
- standard hardware is used
- applications are certified for VMware only
- the existing backup solution does not support Proxmox
- very large environments are to be migrated without a prior pilot
