Phased migration with a rollback plan
Migrate in waves, each with testing, acceptance and a way back.
Large migrations rarely fail in the first wave. They fail on assumptions that only surface later. Waves with a standard procedure, go/no-go criteria and a rollback plan keep errors small. What one wave teaches feeds into the next.
We start with a pilot at a representative site or with a small user group. Only when the process, tests and way back work there do the remaining waves follow.
- many sites, client devices or applications are being migrated
- operations must continue during the migration
- local teams are organised differently
- parallel operation is technically impossible; in that case, you need a fixed cutover date with a full dress rehearsal
- the migration is so small that a single change is enough
In practice
Managing network and firewall migration across many sites
Standardise firewalls and segmentation across many sites, in plannable phases with a rollback plan for each phase.
