OPNsense and pfSense

Open-source firewalls for smaller sites and test environments.

OPNsense and pfSense CE are open-source firewalls based on FreeBSD, with VPN, routing and high availability via CARP. pfSense Plus is the licensed product from Netgate. They run on standard hardware or as a virtual machine and suit smaller sites, test environments and interim solutions.

We place them in Trial. For the perimeter of large enterprises with central management of many sites and extensive reporting, we tend to rely on enterprise firewalls.

A good fit if …
  • smaller sites or branch offices are being connected
  • test environments need their own firewall
  • you need VPN gateways with low licence costs
Not a good fit if …
  • many sites need central management and reporting
  • requirements call for specific certified products
